ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip Review and Swatches – Solow, Bumble, Tulle

If you follow ColourPop on social media, you know that the Ultra Matte Lips have been long-awaited and anticipated by beauty lovers well before the launch date. Many brands have been jumping on the liquid lipstick bandwagon: Anastasia Beverly Hills, L.A. Girl, Lime Crime, and the list goes on. The day the Ultra Matte Lips launched on the ColourPop website… let’s just say the word madness does not describe it enough. I refreshed the page like a madwoman to no avail—that website was just not cooperating with me that day. After an hour of refreshing, I put my laptop to rest.

The next morning, I tried again. A ton of shades were sold out, but all of the shades that I wanted were still available. PRAISE. THE. LORD. (It was a Ramadan miracle!) So I snatched up Solow, Bumble and Tulle.

Onwards to the swatches!

Man you would think that for someone with the blog name SWATCHING Oddity, my swatches would come out way better. But I digress.

Overall, the formulation of these liquid lipsticks are fantastic. I’ve tried a ton of liquid lipsticks in the past and in comparison, these lipsticks are very comfortable to wear. I would compare the way they feel to the Sephora Cream Lip Stains (my favourite liquid lipstick formulation). Those are $13 USD and these are $6. The L.A. Girl Matte Pigment Glosses are around the same price point as the ColourPop, but in terms of quality, ColourPop > L.A. Girl. For the price, you are really getting a steal.

I’ve read other reviews about the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lips being patchy for the lighter shades, but for the colours that I ordered, I didn’t have any issues with patchiness.

Here is a review of each shade I purchased:

Solow

The formula is great, but I was disappointed with this colour. It’s a neutral, midtone pink that looks really strange on my skin tone. It clashes against my complexion and looks very unnatural. I really wish there was just a hint of brown in this colour because it would suit WAY more skin colours if it did!

For reference, I am an NC35 in MAC (if you’d like to know which other foundation shades I wear, click here). I mixed Solow with my Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 02 Classic Beige (which is discontinued, but any beige liquid lipstick will do the trick—maybe even ColourPop Trap would work) and it made the colour more wearable.

Bumble

Bumble is gorgeous!!! It’s difficult to describe this colour. It’s a reddish, orange-ish, browny shade (ColourPop’s website describes it a lot better: dusty warm terracotta). I know that I will be reaching for this shade a lot and I believe that this shade will suit almost all skin tones!

Tulle

Tulle is another gorgeous colour. This shade is what I wished Anastasia Vamp would be. It’s a plummy-reddish brown, but not so brown that you look like you just smeared chocolate all over your lips. And because it has that touch of berry in it, it makes it that much prettier and wearable. Oh Tulle, you’re a beaut.

Final Thoughts

ColourPop really killed it with this collection! These Ultra Matte Lips are definitely worth the hype. For $6 USD, you really can’t go wrong. My only criticism is that I wish they created more neutral shades that suited tan and deeper skin tones. The bright and vampy colours are great, but I’m not one to reach for those kind of colours on the regular. If I’m able to snatch up more shades in the future, the colours that I have my eye on are Avenue, Lychee and Trap!
